For this itinerary we selected the most spectacular of Montenegro’s northern national parks: Durmitor, Biogradska Gora and the very eastern frontier of the Prokletije mountains. These protected areas offer some of the most beautiful mountains and hiking regions in the country.

Hiking in the National Parks of Montenegro is a genuinely authentic adventure. Nowhere else you can experience so much living traditions, scenic diversity and warm hospitality. Imposing mountain peaks and beautiful panoramic trails, dazzling mountain lakes and wide plateaus, dense forests and rugged rock landscapes – these are the ingredients of this diverse walking adventure in North Montenegro.

Detailed itinerary

What you'll see and do

This is a customisable trip

Use the following itinerary for inspiration. Remember: all days, hotels and activities can be altered to suit your requirements. A 3e Travel travel specialist will be happy to advise.

Arrival and transfer to Durmitor National Park

Meet your driver and drive via Niksic, the 2nd biggest town of Montenegro. A detour of approx. 2,5hrs takes you to the famous Ostrog Monastery, built in a steep wall. Continue your drive to the National Park Durmitor, the top of Montenegro.

Three days of hiking in Durmitor National Park

From your base in Durmitor National Park you'll enjoy three full days of hiking through these glorious, remote, and quiet landscapes.

Day hike 1: Poscenje – Komarnica Canyon – Durmitor Saddle (5-6hrs, 12 km, approx. 1000m ascent)

Poscenje a small picturesque village at the foot of Komarnica canyon. Your walk starts gently, following the trail to upper Komarnica Canyon to the mountain forest of Komarnica Greda. The trails starts slowly to climb until the Durmitor Saddle, one of the most iconic mountain panoramas in the National Park. You'll meet your driver here for the drive back to your guesthouse.

Day hike 2: Crvena Greda – Lake Jablan – Zabljak (5-6hrs, 15 km, 700m ascent/descent)

Today you head out after breakfast to embark on a stunning walk to the summit of Crvena Greda, one of the best viewpoints in Durmitor. You’ll first ascend through lush pastures full of wild flowers and pine trees with the high peaks of Durmitor in the distance. Soon you face what will be your high point as a beautifully arranged cirque comes in to view and surrounds the lake below.

Day hike 3: Durmitor National Park crossing (5hrs, 600m ascent/descent)

After breakfast transfer to Durmitor Saddle before setting out on foot to some stunning stone formations. After a short break at a so-called 'mountain eye' – a small glacier lake – you head for the steepest part of this trail, which becomes a scramble in places. Afterwards you'll meet your driver for a transfer to Biogradska National Park.

Included meals: Breakfast

Biogradska Gora National Park crossing

Explore the mountain lakes of Biogradska Gora National Park. At first you climb the virgin forest, until you reach a great viewpoint right above the lake. Your walk takes you across meadows and all the time you enjoy a great panorama. If you wish you can climb the highest peaks of Bjelasica before you walk down to a beautiful valley.

(5-6 hrs, 14km, 600 m ascent, 800 descent)

Included meals: Breakfast

Prokletije National Park

After breakfast you are transferred to beautiful lake Plav and Prokletije National Park. This protected is the youngest and it is the most dramatic hiking destination in Montenegro. Vertical peaks pierce the sky. Wild chamois sprint between jagged cliffs. The park encompasses most of the Prokletije mountains, which form the natural border between Montenegro and Albania. Immerse yourself with this new region and explore with a moderate hike to Volusnica the most incredible view of the Karanfili peaks, the most photogenic massif in the Accursed Mountains. When you reach Volusnica, the hike continues along the ridge to Talijanka (2057 m), the peak that straddles Montenegro and Albania. Prepare yourself to be wowed. Note: Talijanka is often called Popadija. Remark: This a perfect early afternoon hike. If you hike in the morning, the sun will blind your view of the Karanfili peaks.

(5-6hrs, 14km,600 m ascent/600 descent)

Included meals: Breakfast

Prokletije National Park – the “Kissing cats” circle

Krosnja is a glacial cirque high up in the Karanfili mountains. It’s a long slog to the top. As you ascend, you’ll have impressive views of Grebaje valley. The trail traverses mountain slopes surrounded by peaks and brings you to a natural arch appropriately named Šuplja vrata, or kissing cats. You’ll climb through the arch, traverse another slope and then descend into a gully. The views are epic! This hike is difficult and best undertaken by experienced hikers. Half the trail is well-marked and the second-half is not marked at all.

(6-7 hrs, 15km, 800m/-800m)

Included meals: Breakfast

Departure

After breakfast you'll be met by your driver for a transfer to Podgorica Airport, or your onward destination.

The absolutely incredible scenery and the very friendly and welcoming people of Montenegro and Albania. One of my favourite holidays ever. Everyone was so accommodating on our trip. The hotels we stayed in were very friendly and did their best to make sure we had a comfortable stay.

One of the best tours, it had everything. Stunning hikes during the day and then we could relax back at the hotel
and on the beaches, swimming and snorkeling. The whole team at 3e travel were amazing and they do all the
hard work for you (besides the hiking, but that makes the view so much more special). I can't recommend
3E enough, and we'll definitely use them again to explore the surrounding areas next time we get to
go back.

I am a regular cycle visitor to the Adriatic coast but had little knowledge of Montenegro. I found 3e on the internet and was glad I did. I told them our dates, number or riders and ability and they did the rest. They came up with an excellent itinerary, sorted accommodation and bikes and supported us on the ride. Without their local knowledge we could not have discovered the fantastic rides and places without 3e. Angelika was just fantastic. Hope to get back for some trail rides soon.

I cannot praise Angelika and the team at 3e highly enough. I wanted to organise a trip for 40 friends to Montenegro to celebrate my partner's 50th birthday. a friend recommended 3e. I contacted Angelika and explained our rather complicated requirements - with a combination of long hikes and adventure sports for some, relaxation for others, lots of culture and history, authentic experiences, good food and wine, hip locations and boutique accommodation, and all of it for not too high a budget! much to my amazement, she came back to me within 24 hours with a proposed itinerary which exactly matched our requirements - she immediately understood the style that our group was looking for, and after that we only made minor changes to the basic itinerary. From then on, everything about the organisation could not have been smoother - the communication back and forth was fast, the 3e team successfully greeted our guests arriving at 3 different airports on multiple different days, all of o...
